Summary

During the early and adolescent growth stages, genetics, environment, and nutrition can influence the development of skeletal abnormalities. Nutrition can play a key role in decreasing the occurrence and severity of these abnormalities. During the adult years, maintaining optimum body weight can help reduce the development and progression of a number of conditions, including OA. If owners fail to maintain their pet’s optimal body weight, one of the most rewarding interventions can be the implementation of an effective weight-loss program. During the senior years, maintenance of optimal body weight and condition is important in maintaining healthy mobility. Maintenance of muscle mass and tone becomes important to protecting and compensating for aging joints, as does moderating inflammatory processes affecting the joints.
