The most frequent diseases of the thyroid gland in dogs are neoplasm and hypothyroidism , and hyperthyroidism in cats. The first-choice diagnostic technique is to evaluate thyroid hormones serum concentrations. Imaging of the thyroid gland is performed in cases of cervical masses of unknown origin.

The aim of the paper is to illustrate the usefulness of ultrasonography in the diagnosis of the thyroid gland diseases in dogs and cats. Size, echogenicity, volume, vascularity, boundaries are described for each pathological condition. A synergic use of complete blood count, serum biochemical analysis, biochemical thyroid tests and ultrasonographic examination is recommended in order to achieve a more accurate diagnosis of thyroid gland diseases.
